The Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) has restored its Unified Member Portal after completing a nearly week-long technology upgrade, introducing a redesigned interface and significant changes to the way members access key services. The overhaul is part of a large-scale database consolidation and software modernisation initiative aimed at enhancing the speed, security, and reliability of EPFO’s digital services.
One of the most notable changes is the migration of UAN (Universal Account Number) activation and new UAN generation from the EPFO portal to the Government of India’s UMANG app. Going forward, both services can only be accessed through the UMANG platform using Aadhaar-based Face Authentication Technology (FAT).

Why Has EPFO Upgraded the Portal?
EPFO has undertaken a comprehensive backend upgrade to modernise its digital infrastructure. According to the organisation, the exercise includes database consolidation, software enhancements, and additional security measures designed to provide faster processing, stronger authentication, and a more stable online experience for millions of subscribers.
During the initial stabilisation period following the upgrade, EPFO has cautioned that online claims and service requests may take slightly longer than usual due to enhanced verification and validation checks.
Major Changes Introduced on the EPFO Portal
Following the upgrade, several member services have either been modified or shifted to other government platforms.
The key changes include:
- UAN activation through the EPFO Unified Member Portal has been discontinued.
- Direct generation of a new UAN is no longer available on the EPFO website.
- Both services have been migrated to the UMANG mobile application.
- Aadhaar-based Face Authentication has become mandatory for UAN activation and allotment.
- The process for retrieving a forgotten UAN has been simplified.
- Online death claim filing continues to remain available on the EPFO portal.
UAN Activation Now Mandatory Through UMANG
Subscribers can no longer activate their Universal Account Number through the EPFO website.
Instead, members must complete the activation process using the UMANG (Unified Mobile Application for New-age Governance) app, which serves as the Government of India’s unified digital services platform.
Steps to Activate UAN Through UMANG
- Download the UMANG app from the Google Play Store or Apple App Store.
- Open the app and navigate to EPFO Services.
- Select “UAN Activation” under “UAN Services Through Face Authentication.”
- Complete Aadhaar Face Authentication.
- Follow the on-screen instructions to finish the activation process.
New UAN Generation Also Shifted to UMANG
EPFO has also removed the option to generate a fresh UAN through its website.
Employees requiring a new Universal Account Number must now:
- Open the UMANG app.
- Select EPFO Services.
- Click “UAN Allotment and Activation.”
- Complete Aadhaar Face Authentication.
- Follow the prompts to generate and activate the UAN.
Existing EPF Members Without a UAN
Employees who already possess an EPF account but have not yet been allotted a UAN can still obtain one through the updated process.
Applicants will need to:
- Verify their registered mobile number.
- Provide the required member details.
- Complete the verification process.
- Receive a newly generated UAN linked to their existing EPF account.
Forgot Your UAN? Here’s the New Recovery Process
The upgraded system has also simplified UAN retrieval.
Members need to:
- Enter their registered mobile number.
- Upload the required identity or address proof.
- Verify the OTP sent to their registered mobile number.
- Retrieve their UAN after successful verification.
The revised process is intended to make account recovery quicker while maintaining stronger identity verification standards.
Death Claim Facility Continues on EPFO Portal
Unlike UAN-related services, the online facility for filing death claims remains available through the EPFO Unified Member Portal.
Beneficiaries should keep the following documents ready before submitting a claim:
- Aadhaar-linked mobile number
- Bank account details
- Death certificate of the deceased member
- Cancelled cheque or bank passbook
- Proof of date of birth, wherever applicable
EPFO has specified that all supporting documents must be uploaded in PDF format, each file should not exceed 2 MB, and file names must not contain spaces.
Members Advised to Exercise Patience
Since the upgraded system is still undergoing a stabilisation phase, EPFO has advised subscribers to avoid making repeated submissions or attempting multiple logins during peak hours. Additional verification checks may result in temporary delays in processing claims and online requests over the coming weeks.
What This Means for EPF Subscribers
The latest overhaul marks a significant shift in EPFO‘s digital service delivery by moving identity-sensitive services such as UAN activation and allotment to Aadhaar-enabled Face Authentication through the UMANG app. While the transition is expected to strengthen security and reduce identity-related fraud, members will need to adapt to the new authentication process and may experience minor delays until the upgraded platform is fully stabilised.
