The Karnataka government has reinstated senior IPS officer Dr. K. Ramchandra Rao, stepfather of Kannada actor Ranya Rao, as Director General of Police (DGP) of the Directorate of Civil Rights Enforcement, reversing its earlier decision to send him on compulsory leave.

In an official notification, the government announced that the earlier order placing Dr. Rao on leave has been withdrawn. He has been posted to the upgraded vacant position of DGP, Directorate of Civil Rights Enforcement, with immediate effect and until further orders.

The notification further clarified that the post will carry the same status and responsibilities as that of the DGP, Criminal Investigation Department (CID), Special Units & Economic Offences, Bengaluru, as per Rule 12 of the IPS (Pay) Rules, 2016, and listed in Schedule II of the same rules.

Dr. Rao was directed to go on compulsory leave in March this year after Ranya Rao was arrested in connection with a gold smuggling case. His reinstatement marks a significant reversal in the state’s earlier administrative stance.
