The Directorate of Foreign Trade (DGFT) has amended the import policy for Areca Nuts under the ITC (HS) Codes 08028090 and 20081991, setting a Minimum Import Price (MIP) of ₹351 per kilogram. Imports below this value will now be prohibited, according to a notification issued by the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT), Ministry of Commerce and Industry.
The new regulation, published under Notification No. 43/2025-26, introduces significant changes to the import conditions of both raw and roasted areca nuts.
Raw Areca Nuts (ITC HS Code 08028090)
Raw Areca Nuts imports are prohibited unless the CIF (Cost, Insurance, and Freight) value is ₹351 or above per kilogram. The MIP restriction does not apply to 100% Export Oriented Units (EOUs), units in Special Economic Zones (SEZs), or imports made under the Advance Authorization Scheme.
Roasted Areca Nuts (ITC HS Code 20081991)
Roasted Areca Nuts Imports with CIF value below ₹351 per kilogram are prohibited. Imports of other roasted nuts and seeds under the same code remain free. The MIP condition is exempt for imports by 100% EOUs, SEZ units, and under the Advance Authorization Scheme.
The DGFT clarified that the import of Roasted Areca Nuts valued below ₹351 per kg will now be strictly prohibited. This move aims to curb low-value imports and protect domestic areca nut growers from price undercutting by cheaper imports.
