In a move aimed at expediting long-pending assessment work, the Department of Trade & Taxes, Government of the National Capital Territory (NCT) of Delhi, has ordered that its offices will remain open on every Saturday and Sunday throughout December 2025. The special working arrangement has been introduced to clear the pendency of assessment cases for the financial year 2021–22.

According to an official order issued by the Administration Branch of the department, all officers and officials posted in various wards have been permitted to attend office on these weekends to accelerate the disposal of pending assessment matters. The decision underscores the department’s intent to reduce backlog and ensure timely completion of statutory proceedings that have accumulated over the past few years.

However, keeping in mind the festive season, the department has provided a specific relaxation for Christmas. The order clearly states that any employee who wishes to participate in Christmas celebrations will be exempted from attending office on December 25, 2025. This exemption seeks to balance administrative urgency with employee sentiments during the holiday period.

The order has been issued with the prior approval of the competent authority and has been formally communicated to senior officials, including the Commissioner (Trade & Taxes), Special Commissioner (Administration), Accounts Branch, vigilance and administrative wings, as well as engineering and security departments to ensure smooth functioning of offices on weekends.

Officials said the weekend working schedule is a temporary but focused measure to address assessment pendency and improve overall efficiency in tax administration. The move is expected to provide relief to taxpayers as well, as faster completion of assessments may reduce uncertainty and prolonged litigation.

The directive comes at a time when tax departments across jurisdictions are under increasing pressure to streamline processes, close legacy cases, and enhance revenue administration through timely adjudication.
