The Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC), under the Ministry of Finance announced the substitution of tariff value tables for key import commodities. Despite the update, the CBIC has chosen to maintain the status quo, with no changes in the existing tariff values.

The notification, issued in exercise of powers under Section 14(2) of the Customs Act, 1962, revises Tables 1, 2, and 3 of the earlier Notification No. 36/2001-Customs (N.T.), dated August 3, 2001. These tables serve as reference values for determining customs duty on imported goods, helping standardize assessments and prevent under-invoicing.

According to the updated tables, tariff values for a wide range of essential commodities remain unchanged. Crude Palm Oil continues to be valued at USD 965 per metric tonne, RBD Palmolein at USD 1026 per metric tonne, and Crude Soyabean Oil at USD 1092 per metric tonne. Similarly, Brass Scrap (all grades) retains its valuation of USD 5483 per metric tonne.

In the precious metals category, Gold remains fixed at USD 1067 per 10 grams, and Silver at USD 1189 per kilogram, covering both standard forms and medallions/coins with purity not below 99.9%. The valuation also applies to semi-manufactured silver forms, with specific exclusions for foreign coins and jewellery.

For areca nuts, which fall under Table-3, the tariff value is retained at USD 6970 per metric tonne, reflecting continued stability in this commodity segment.

The revised notification will come into effect from June 12, 2025. CBIC conducts these fortnightly tariff value revisions based on international price trends to maintain transparency and consistency in customs assessments across ports and customs stations.
