The Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC), maintaining existing tariff values on several key imported goods.

The notification covers a wide range of commodities, including edible oils, precious metals, brass scrap, and areca nuts. Notably, the government has chosen not to revise tariff benchmarks despite ongoing fluctuations in global commodity markets. This move is seen as an effort to ensure price stability and predictability for both importers and consumers.

In the edible oil segment, tariff values for crude and refined palm oil, palmolein, and soybean oil remain unchanged. These commodities are essential to India’s food supply chain, and stable tariff values help prevent sudden increases in retail prices. Industry observers believe that this consistency will support domestic availability and reduce inflationary pressures in the food sector.

Similarly, tariff values for precious metals such as gold and silver have been retained. Gold continues to be valued at USD 1481 per 10 grams, while silver remains at USD 2262 per kilogram. These benchmarks are important for the bullion and jewelry industries, where even minor fluctuations in import duties can significantly impact pricing and demand.

The notification also confirms unchanged tariff values for brass scrap and areca nuts. Brass scrap, widely used in manufacturing and recycling industries, remains at USD 7404 per metric tonne, while areca nuts are fixed at USD 7020 per metric tonne. The absence of changes across these categories suggests a broader government strategy focused on continuity rather than frequent adjustments.

Experts note that tariff values are primarily used to prevent under-invoicing and ensure fair customs duty collection. By maintaining existing values, the government appears to be signaling confidence in current market conditions while avoiding unnecessary disruptions to trade flows.
