CBIC Promotes 57 IRS (Customs & Indirect Taxes) Officers as Joint Commissioners for Vacancy Year 2026

The Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC) announced the promotion of 57 Indian Revenue Service (IRS) officers of the Customs & Indirect Taxes cadre to the rank of Joint Commissioner (Level-12) on a regular basis against the vacancy year 2026.

The promotions have been approved by the President of India and will take effect from the date the officers assume charge of their promotional posts. The order was issued from Kartavya Bhawan-I, New Delhi, and is signed by S.A. Ansari, Deputy Secretary to the Government of India.

As per the office order the promoted officers will initially assume charge on an “as-is-where-is” basis, meaning they will continue in the same place of posting until regular postings are approved by the competent authority.

The promotions are subject to the outcome of any pending court cases, if applicable.

Officers currently on deputation will be eligible for promotion only upon returning to the cadre and assuming charge of the promotional post. Those opting to continue on ex-cadre posts may seek proforma promotion, subject to approval and submission of proposals by January 9, 2026.

Officers who are under suspension, facing charge sheets, prosecution, or undergoing penalties will not be permitted to assume charge as Joint Commissioner, and such cases must be immediately reported to the Board.

Compliance reports regarding assumption of charge must be forwarded to the CBIC and ADG (HRM-II), DGHRD, by January 9, 2026.
