The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) has extended the due date for filing Income Tax Returns (ITRs) for a specified category of taxpayers, providing significant relief to non-audit businesses and professionals. The deadline, which was set to expire on July 31, has now been extended to August 31.

The extension is expected to benefit lakhs of taxpayers who are required to file ITR-3 and ITR-4, including small businesses, professionals, proprietorship firms, and individuals having business or professional income that does not require a tax audit.

Relief Not Available to All Taxpayers

The CBDT has clarified that the extension is not applicable to every category of taxpayer. The relaxation has been granted only for specified classes of assessees whose accounts are not liable to audit under the Income Tax Act.

Taxpayers whose returns are governed by different statutory deadlines, including audit cases, will continue to be subject to the due dates prescribed for their respective categories unless notified otherwise.

Major Relief for Businesses and Professionals

The extension comes as a major relief for taxpayers filing ITR-3 and ITR-4, many of whom were facing time constraints due to the complexity of return preparation, reconciliation of financial data, and compliance requirements.

Professionals such as doctors, lawyers, consultants, architects, chartered accountants, and small business owners covered under presumptive taxation schemes are among the key beneficiaries of the decision.

More Time to Ensure Accurate Compliance

Tax experts believe the additional one-month window will help taxpayers reconcile Form 26AS, Annual Information Statement (AIS), Taxpayer Information Summary (TIS), and other financial records before filing their returns. The extension is also expected to reduce last-minute pressure on taxpayers and tax professionals while ensuring greater accuracy in return filing.

Taxpayers Advised Not to Delay

Although the due date has been extended to August 31, experts have advised eligible taxpayers not to postpone filing until the last day. Filing returns well before the revised deadline can help avoid portal congestion, facilitate quicker processing of refunds, and reduce the risk of errors arising from last-minute submissions.

The CBDT‘s decision is expected to provide much-needed breathing space to non-audit taxpayers while ensuring smoother compliance during the current income tax return filing season.
