The Ministry of Personnel, Public Grievances and Pensions Department of Personnel and Training Secretariat of the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has notified that the the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has approved the appointment of IRS Vivek Chaturvedi to the post of Chairman, Central Board of Indirect Taxes & Customs (CBIC).

“The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has approved the appointment of Shri Vivek Chaturvedi, IRS(C&IT:1990), Member, Central Board of Indirect Taxes & Customs to the post of Chairman, Central Board of Indirect Taxes & Customs (CBIC),” the notification read.

Who Is  IRS Vivek Chaturvedi?

Mr.  Vivek Chaturvedi, a 1990-batch officer of the IRS (Customs & Indirect Taxes), was the Principal Director General of Vigilance and the Chief Vigilance Officer at the CBIC. He is set to take over from Vivek Ranjan, Member (Tax Policy & Legal), who demitted office on August 31, 2025.

His elevation comes at a pivotal moment for the CBIC, which is undergoing a significant reshuffle at the highest levels. Along with Vivek Ranjan’s exit, two other senior officials — including the incumbent CBIC Chairman — are slated to retire on November 30, 2025. Chaturvedi’s appointment is therefore seen as the first step in a broader overhaul of the Board’s top leadership in the coming months.

Known for his deep experience in vigilance, compliance, and indirect tax administration, Chaturvedi is regarded as a steady and capable officer suited to guide the CBIC through its next phase of policy refinement and compliance strengthening. His tenure as Chief Vigilance Officer assumes particular importance, reflecting the government’s continued focus on transparency, accountability, and institutional integrity across its tax mechanisms.

The appointment also signals the Centre’s intent to maintain leadership stability as the indirect tax regime evolves — shaped by ongoing GST reforms, tighter compliance norms, and expanding digitisation in customs operations. With more than 30 years of service behind him, Chaturvedi’s expertise is expected to play a vital role in streamlining indirect tax policy and bolstering enforcement frameworks under the CBIC’s purview.
