A State Bank of India (SBI) customer has reported a troubling incident in which approximately ₹1.44 lakh was withdrawn from both his current and savings accounts without his knowledge or authorization on July 11. The affected customer, Babul Yadav, took to social media to share his ordeal, which has since gained public attention.
According to Yadav, when he approached his local SBI branch for clarity, the branch manager dismissed his concerns, suggesting that the funds must have been transferred by Yadav himself, thereby blaming him for the loss. With no support forthcoming from the bank, Yadav filed formal complaints on the government’s online grievance portal and with the cyber crime division.
“I tried every possible way on my end because the bank wasn’t helping,” Yadav wrote in a post on X (formerly Twitter).
On July 21, Yadav was contacted by the bank and asked to visit the branch. There, he was informed that the bank was attempting to refund the amount but required the original application that he had submitted to the local cyber police station. When Yadav returned to the cyber police to retrieve the document, officials reportedly refused to release it, stating, “What will the bank do with this application? We will not return it.”
Now, the bank is insisting he submit the original cyber crime complaint, while the cyber cell refuses to hand it back—leaving Yadav caught in a bureaucratic deadlock.
“Now I don’t know what to do,” he wrote, tagging @TheOfficialSBI, @RBI, and @Cyberdost in his appeal for help.
The incident highlights persistent challenges faced by digital fraud victims in India, including the lack of a streamlined process between banks and cyber law enforcement agencies. Authorities have yet to issue an official response to the case.
