In a major enforcement action, the Central Intelligence Unit of the Trichy Customs (Preventive) Commissionerate intercepted 11 passengers arriving from Sharjah and Abu Dhabi at Coimbatore International Airport on 11 and 12 February 2026, leading to the seizure of contraband goods valued at ₹65.99 lakh.
Massive Seizure of Cigarettes and E-Cigarettes
The customs officers seized 3.48 lakh cigarettes, 895 e-cigarettes, 21 refurbished laptops and 4 refurbished mobile phones
The seized goods were allegedly being smuggled into India in violation of customs laws and applicable import restrictions.
The large quantity of cigarettes indicates a suspected attempt at organized commercial smuggling rather than personal use import. Import of cigarettes beyond permissible baggage limits attracts heavy customs duty and penalties. Further, e-cigarettes are subject to a complete prohibition under Indian law, making their import, transport, and sale illegal.
Focus on UAE-Origin Flights
The intercepted passengers had arrived on flights from Sharjah and Abu Dhabi, two major transit hubs in the UAE frequently monitored by customs authorities due to recurring instances of gold, tobacco, and electronics smuggling.
Officials stated that the goods were concealed in passenger baggage and were detected through intelligence inputs and profiling by the Central Intelligence Unit.
Legal Action Initiated
Customs authorities have initiated proceedings under the Customs Act, 1962. The seized goods have been confiscated, and further investigation is underway to ascertain:
- The role of any organized syndicate
- Funding sources and end beneficiaries
- Prior smuggling attempts, if any
The passengers are likely to face adjudication proceedings, monetary penalties, and possible prosecution depending on the outcome of the investigation.
