Customs officials at Rajiv Gandhi International Airport (RGIA) have arrested a passenger attempting to smuggle several exotic and protected wildlife species into India. The dramatic seizure took place on September 27, when the individual arrived from Bangkok.

According to a statement issued by the Customs department on Sunday, the passenger was intercepted during routine checks. Upon thorough inspection of the checked-in baggage, officials discovered live exotic animals carefully concealed inside.

The seized wildlife included One Monitor Lizard, One rare two-headed Red-Eared Slider Turtle, Four Green Iguanas, and Twelve other Iguanas.

These species fall under the ambit of wildlife protection laws and are prohibited from being brought into the country without prior clearances.

Officials said the rescued animals were handed over to concerned authorities and subsequently deported back to Bangkok to ensure their survival and rehabilitation. The arrested passenger is facing legal action under provisions of the Customs Act and the Wildlife Protection Act.

The incident underscores the continuing challenges authorities face in combating international wildlife trafficking through air routes. Customs officials reiterated that strict vigilance is being maintained to curb smuggling attempts and protect endangered species.

This case follows a series of recent seizures at Indian airports, where exotic birds, reptiles, and animals have been intercepted, pointing to a growing trend of wildlife smuggling from Southeast Asia into India.
