Gold Smuggling Bid Foiled at IGI Airport; Over 1.48 Kg of Gold Recovered from Passenger Arriving from Sharjah

The Air Intelligence Unit (AIU) of Customs at IGI Airport, Terminal-3, New Delhi, intercepted an Indian male passenger arriving from Sharjah and seized over 1.48 kilograms of smuggled gold.

According to officials, the passenger arrived on flight number G9-465 from Sharjah on July 3, 2025. Acting on specific profiling inputs, customs officers conducted a thorough examination of the passenger’s baggage and a personal search, which led to the recovery of two white plastic pouches containing a yellow-colored paste suspected to conceal gold.

Subsequent extraction from the paste resulted in the recovery of two rectangular-shaped gold bars and one uneven-shaped gold bar, weighing a total of 1484.5 grams. The estimated tariff value of the seized gold is a staggering Rs. 1,34,87,395.

During interrogation, the passenger reportedly divulged information leading to the interception of an individual believed to be the receiver of the smuggled gold.

Customs department have stated that further investigations are underway to confirm the composition of the recovered material and evaluate the case under relevant provisions of the Customs Act, 1962.
