A suspected gold smuggler arriving from Dubai attempted to evade capture at the Kempegowda International Airport (KIA) by abandoning 3.5 kilograms of gold, authorities revealed on Thursday.

According to customs officials, the individual was allegedly smuggling gold biscuits into India. However, upon noticing customs personnel at the terminal, the suspect panicked and threw a bag containing the gold into the luggage trolley of an unsuspecting fellow passenger before fleeing the scene.

“The suspect appeared to have lost his nerve and tried to discreetly pass off the gold by dumping it into another passenger’s trolley,” said an official familiar with the case.

The passenger, unaware of the switch, noticed the bag and promptly alerted customs officers. A subsequent inspection led to the discovery of 3.5 kg of gold biscuits concealed inside the abandoned bag.

Customs authorities are now scrutinizing CCTV footage from the airport to identify and trace the absconding smuggler.
