In a significant crackdown on drug trafficking, the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) has seized approximately 104.9 kilograms of ganja (cannabis) in Bihar and arrested two individuals allegedly involved in its transportation. The operation was carried out on May 30, 2026, under the provisions of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, 1985.

The seizure forms part of the DRI’s ongoing nationwide campaign aimed at disrupting narcotics supply chains and dismantling organised drug trafficking networks. According to officials, the agency has intensified surveillance and intelligence-based operations to curb the movement of illicit drugs across various states.

DRI’s Anti-Narcotics Drive in Bihar

The latest action adds to a series of successful anti-drug operations conducted by the DRI’s Lucknow Zonal Unit in Bihar over the past year. During this period, the agency has seized narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances with an estimated illicit market value of nearly ₹46.5 crore and arrested 31 persons linked to various trafficking cases.

The seizures made during the year include:

  • 107.5 kg of charas
  • 1,277.81 kg of ganja
  • 18.92 kg of high-grade hydroponic weed
  • 6 kg of cocaine
  • 112.8 grams of heroin
  • 8,012 bottles of illegally diverted codeine-based cough syrup

These figures underscore Bihar’s emergence as a critical transit route for narcotic substances and highlight the scale of enforcement efforts being undertaken by central agencies.

Focus on Organised Drug Networks

Officials stated that the DRI has been consistently targeting organised syndicates involved in the trafficking of narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances through coordinated intelligence-led operations. The agency’s strategy focuses not only on intercepting drug consignments but also on identifying and dismantling the larger criminal networks behind such activities.

The recent seizure is being viewed as another step in strengthening enforcement against drug trafficking and reducing the availability of illegal narcotics in the country.

Supporting the ‘Nasha Mukt Bharat’ Mission

The DRI reiterated its commitment to supporting the Government of India’s vision of a “Nasha Mukt Bharat” (Drug-Free India) through sustained enforcement action, intelligence gathering, and inter-agency cooperation. Authorities indicated that investigations into the present case are continuing to identify other individuals and entities connected with the trafficking network.

The two arrested persons are expected to face proceedings under the NDPS Act, which prescribes stringent penalties for offences relating to narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances.
