In a major crackdown on narcotics trafficking, the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI), with the active support of the Assam Rifles, intercepted a vehicle at Katakhal in Assam’s Hailakandi district on June 10, 2025, recovering 3.36 kilograms of heroin after a dramatic high-speed chase.

Acting on intelligence inputs, the DRI team pursued and stopped the suspect vehicle, uncovering a total of 3360 grams of heroin meticulously packed in 280 soap cases. The contraband was concealed in a specially designed cavity within the vehicle, indicating a high level of sophistication in smuggling methods.

In a follow-up operation later that night, the driver and his accomplice were apprehended with the assistance of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) as they attempted to escape into neighboring Mizoram. The duo had reportedly abandoned the vehicle earlier and were on the run.

Authorities believe the heroin was trafficked into India from across the border and intended for distribution through regional networks. The seizure marks a significant blow to the drug smuggling nexus operating in the Northeast.

A case has been registered under the provisions of the NDPS Act, and further investigation is underway to uncover the larger syndicate involved.
