The Air Intelligence Unit (AIU) of Customs at the Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport, New Delhi, has booked a case of alleged smuggling of marijuana/ganja against an Indian passenger arriving from Bangkok.

According to the Customs Department, the passenger arrived at Terminal-3 of IGI Airport on Flight No. AI-2335 dated May 3, 2026. Acting on the basis of profiling and intelligence inputs, Customs officers intercepted the passenger and subjected the baggage to detailed examination.

During the baggage check, officers recovered four polythene pouches containing a green-coloured narcotic substance suspected to be ganja/marijuana. The recovered substance was subjected to field testing, which reportedly indicated positive results for marijuana/ganja on a prima facie basis.

Customs authorities stated that the total net weight of the seized contraband was found to be 977 grams. The seized narcotic substance has been estimated to carry an illicit market value of approximately ₹97.77 lakh.

The department stated that the act amounts to violation of the provisions of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, 1985. The alleged offences are punishable under Sections 8, 20, and 23 of the NDPS Act, which deal with prohibition, possession, and illegal import/export of narcotic substances.

Following the seizure, the passenger was arrested on May 4, 2026 under Section 43(b) of the NDPS Act. The contraband along with the packing materials used for concealment was also seized under Section 43(a) of the Act.

Customs officials confirmed that further investigation is currently underway to ascertain the source, intended recipients, and possible links to any wider narcotics smuggling network operating through international routes.
