CBIC Constitutes 4 Interim Boards For Settlement Under Central Excise Act

The Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC) has notified the constitution of four Interim Boards for Settlement under Section 31A(1) of the Central Excise Act, 1944.

The notification, numbered 02/2025-Central Excise (N.T.), was issued on April 8, 2025, and published under S.O. 1656(E). This move aims to streamline and expedite the resolution of long-pending central excise disputes across different regions of the country.

The Government has constituted four Interim Boards for Settlement.

Each board will be headquartered in a major metro city:

  • Interim Board for Settlement-IDelhi
  • Interim Board for Settlement-IIKolkata
  • Interim Board for Settlement-IIIMumbai
  • Interim Board for Settlement-IVChennai

These Boards will handle legacy issues and pending settlement applications under the Central Excise regime, which was subsumed by GST in July 2017.
