In one of the largest narcotics seizures in recent months, the Air Intelligence Unit (AIU) of Bengaluru Customs confiscated hydroponic ganja valued at Rs. 37.88 crore at Kempegowda International Airport (KIA).
According to officials, the seizure took place on October 29 at Terminal 2, when a passenger arriving from Bangkok via Dubai was intercepted based on specific intelligence. During baggage inspection, officers discovered 37.88 kilograms of hydroponic ganja concealed within the passenger’s luggage.
The accused was immediately detained, and further proceedings have been initiated under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, 1985. Hydroponic ganja, a high-grade variant of cannabis cultivated using nutrient-enriched water instead of soil, commands a steep price in the illicit market due to its potency.
Customs officials stated that the case highlights growing attempts to smuggle synthetic and high-grade narcotics through international air routes, often disguised within passenger baggage. Investigations are underway to determine the source of the contraband, possible links to international drug syndicates, and intended recipients within India.
Authorities emphasized that Bengaluru Customs remains vigilant against such smuggling operations, with enhanced surveillance and intelligence coordination across international airports.
