The Air Intelligence Unit (AIU) of Customs, Ahmedabad, has seized gold jewellery worth approximately Rs. 1.52 crore from four passengers arriving from Jeddah, following suspicious baggage scans at Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport.

According to an official communication shared by Ahmedabad Customs, the seizure was made on February 1, 2026, after officers intercepted the passengers arriving on Akasa Air flight QP-564 from Jeddah. Acting on inputs generated through baggage scanning systems, the AIU conducted detailed examinations of the passengers’ luggage.

Gold Jewellery Recovered

During the search, Customs officers recovered seven gold chains and seven gold bangles, all of 24-carat purity, with a total weight of 945.57 grams. The seized gold has been provisionally valued at Rs. 1.52 crore based on prevailing market rates.

The jewellery was allegedly concealed and not declared to Customs authorities, raising suspicion of smuggling in violation of the Customs Act, 1962.

Multiple Passengers Under Scanner

The seizure involved four passengers, indicating a possible coordinated attempt to smuggle high-value gold into India. Officials are examining whether the passengers were acting independently or as part of an organised smuggling network.

Investigation Underway

Customs authorities have confirmed that further investigation is underway to ascertain the source of the gold, the intent behind its concealment, and any possible links to syndicates involved in gold smuggling from the Middle East.

Statements of the passengers are being recorded, and legal proceedings under the Customs Act are expected to follow based on the outcome of the investigation.
