If you’re planning to fly soon, be prepared for new hand baggage regulations introduced by the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS) and the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF).Ā

These updated rules, effective May 2, 2024, are aimed at streamlining airport security and reducing congestion. Here’s everything you need to know about the latest hand baggage policies.

1. One Hand Baggage Rule Per Passenger

Under the new guidelines, each passenger is allowed only one piece of hand baggage per flight. This rule applies to both domestic and international travelers. If you carry more than one bag, you’ll need to check in the extra luggage.

2. Hand Baggage Weight Limits Based on Travel Class

Passengers must adhere to specific weight limits depending on their class of travel:

  • Economy & Premium Economy: Maximum 7 kg
  • First & Business Class: Maximum 10 kg

3. Strict Size Restrictions for Carry-On Bags

To ensure smoother security checks, airlines have also imposed strict size limits on hand baggage:

  • Height: 55 cm (21.6 inches)
  • Length: 40 cm (15.7 inches)
  • Width: 20 cm (7.8 inches)

4. Exemptions for Bookings Made Before May 2, 2024

Passengers who booked their flights before May 2, 2024, are eligible for relaxed baggage limits:

  • Economy Class: Up to 8 kg
  • Premium Economy: Up to 10 kg
  • First & Business Class: Up to 12 kg

5. New Rules Apply to Tickets Booked After May 2, 2024

For travelers booking their flights on or after May 2, 2024, these revised baggage rules will be strictly enforced.

6. Faster Security Checks & Enhanced Safety

The updated baggage policy aims to improve airport efficiency by reducing the number of items screened at security checkpoints. With fewer carry-ons per passenger, security checks will be quicker, ensuring a smoother travel experience.

7. Plan Your Hand Baggage Accordingly

To avoid last-minute hassles at the airport, make sure your carry-on bag is compact, lightweight, and within the allowed limits. Staying informed about these new baggage rules can help prevent unexpected fees and delays.
