The Goods and Services Tax Network (GSTN) has announced a significant move to simplify tax payments by enabling businesses and taxpayers to pay their GST dues through UPI and debit or credit cards. This facility is currently available across 23 states and Union Territories, with the rest of the country expected to be covered soon.

The new payment option allows taxpayers to use any UPI app, or cards powered by RuPay, Mastercard, Visa, and Diners. Participating banks facilitating these transactions include major institutions like Axis Bank, Canara Bank, HDFC Bank, IDFC First Bank, Kotak Mahindra Bank, ICICI Bank, Bandhan Bank, and others. Certain banks such as Dhanlaxmi Bank, Karnataka Bank, and Karur Vysya Bank are offering the UPI facility exclusively.

This move is aimed at making tax compliance more convenient and digitised. Taxpayers can now pay GST dues directly via the GST portal without relying solely on net banking or traditional methods.

States and UTs Covered So Far

The facility has been rolled out in key regions including Delhi, Maharashtra, Gujarat, Tamil Nadu, West Bengal, Kerala, Karnataka, and Uttar Pradesh, among others. Smaller and northeastern states such as Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Manipur, Tripura, and Jammu & Kashmir are also part of this initiative.

Expansion Plans

GSTN has indicated that remaining states and additional banks will be brought under the fold in the near future to ensure nationwide coverage and ease of payment.
