Delhi CM Rekha Gupta Urges for a Faceless GST System, Highlights Rs. 80,000 Crore in Pending Dues

Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Saturday called for a more transparent and “faceless” Goods and Services Tax (GST) regime, emphasising the need to simplify tax collection and reduce bureaucratic hurdles for businesses. Speaking at an event organised by the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI), Gupta revealed that over ₹80,000 crore in GST dues owed to the Delhi government remain pending due to various disputes and administrative challenges.

Addressing a gathering of Chartered Accountants, Gupta said, “Our aim should be to make the GST system entirely faceless. Taxes must be collected in a hassle-free and transparent manner.” She urged GST officers to refrain from summoning businesspersons to their offices if the individuals are already involved in court proceedings related to their cases.

The Chief Minister also lauded the Chartered Accountant community for its indispensable role in addressing tax-related disputes and contributing to Delhi’s economic resilience.

Referring to the state’s recent budget announcement, she remarked, “This was the first time a ₹1 lakh crore budget was presented while the government’s treasury was nearly empty. People asked who could present such a big budget in these conditions — I had faith in this community. I knew they would help the government meet its revenue goals.”

Gupta’s comments come at a time when the Delhi government is under pressure to streamline its tax administration and recover substantial dues to fund developmental projects.

The ICAI event was attended by several professionals and policy experts, where broader issues surrounding taxation, fiscal discipline, and economic policy were discussed.
