SAVE BIG THIS DIWALI: Govt Announces Next-Gen GST Reforms on Essentials, Healthcare, Automobiles & More

In what is being hailed as a “historic Diwali gift” for citizens, the Government of India has unveiled sweeping Next-Gen GST Reforms that promise massive savings for households, farmers, students, and businesses. Prime Minister Narendra Modi said the reforms will not only make everyday living more affordable but also give a significant boost to the economy and small enterprises.

The 56th GST Council meeting approved major reductions across daily essentials, agriculture, healthcare, education, automobiles, and electronic appliances. The government described it as a move to build Ease of Living and promote Aatmanirbhar Bharat.

Save Big on Daily Essentials

Hair oil, shampoo, toothpaste, soaps, shaving cream, and toothbrushes will now be taxed at 5% instead of 18%. Similarly, butter, ghee, cheese, and dairy spreads will attract just 5% GST, down from 12%. Items like utensils, baby diapers, napkins, feeding bottles, sewing machines, and pre-packaged snacks will also move to the 5% slab.

Save Big for Farmers & Agriculture

Tractors and tractor parts, earlier taxed at 12–18%, will now draw only 5% GST. Inputs like bio-pesticides, micronutrients, irrigation systems, and agricultural machinery have also been cut to 5%, significantly reducing farming costs.

Save Big on Healthcare

Individual health and life insurance has been completely exempted from GST (18% to Nil). Thermometers too have been exempted, while diagnostic kits, oxygen, test strips, and corrective spectacles now fall under the 5% slab.

Save Big on Education

Students will benefit from zero GST on maps, globes, exercise books, notebooks, pencils, sharpeners, crayons, and erasers. Officials said the exemption will ease the financial burden on families, especially schoolchildren.

Save Big on Automobiles

Hybrid cars, motorcycles (350 cc and below), three-wheelers, and goods transport vehicles will now attract 18% GST instead of 28%. The government expects this to spur demand in the automobile sector, making vehicles more affordable for consumers.

Save Big on Electronics

Families will now pay less for air conditioners, washing machines, televisions (above 32”), LED & LCD TVs, monitors, and projectors — all reduced from 28% to 18% GST.

Business-Friendly Process Reforms

  • Faster Registration: Automatic GST registration within 3 days through a data-driven system.
  • Quicker Refunds: Provisional refunds sanctioned under a risk-based verification framework.
  • Relief for suppliers under inverted duty structure and zero-rated supplies.

PM Modi’s Statement

“The next generation of GST reforms are a gift for every Indian this Diwali. Taxes for the general public will be reduced substantially. Our MSMEs and small entrepreneurs will get huge benefit. Everyday items will become cheaper and this will also give a new boost to the economy,” Prime Minister Narendra Modi said.

The Bigger Picture

Economists believe the reforms will cool inflation, stimulate demand, and improve purchasing power across sectors. While families will “save big” on essentials, farmers will see reduced input costs, and businesses will face smoother compliance processes.

The government’s intent is clear — simplify GST, support growth, and bring relief to every segment of society under the vision of Aatmanirbhar Bharat.
