In a significant crackdown on corruption, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has apprehended Vivek Kumar Singh, an inspector with the Central Goods and Services Tax (CGST) office in Baraut, Baghpat, Uttar Pradesh, along with a private individual, Abhishek Swami, for their alleged involvement in a ₹6,000 bribery case. This operation underscores the CBI’s commitment to rooting out corruption within government institutions.

Bribery Allegations and Arrests

The case originated from a complaint filed on April 7, 2025, under Section 7A of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988 (as amended in 2018). The complainant alleged that Abhishek Swami, acting as a middleman for the CGST office in Baraut, demanded a bribe of ₹6,000 to facilitate the issuance of a GST registration number for the complainant’s firm.Acting swiftly, the CBI set up a trap and caught Swami red-handed while accepting the bribe in Baraut.

Inspector’s Involvement Uncovered

Subsequent investigations revealed that Inspector Vivek Kumar Singh was the orchestrator behind the bribery scheme, using Swami to solicit and collect the bribe on his behalf. The illegal gratification was intended to expedite the GST registration process by leveraging Singh’s official capacity. Despite being summoned for questioning, Singh reportedly refused to cooperate with the investigation, leading to his arrest on April 9, 2025.

CBI’s Stance on Corruption

This incident highlights the persistent issue of corruption within the CGST departments across India. In recent years, there have been multiple cases where CGST officials were apprehended for accepting bribes. For instance, in October 2023, the CBI arrested two superintendents, an inspector, and a tax assistant from the CGST office in Aligarh for demanding and accepting a bribe of ₹25,000 from a businessman to settle erroneous notices sent to him.

Similarly, in December 2024, three CGST officials were arrested in Chennai for demanding a bribe of ₹5 lakh from a Madurai-based transport businessman.  These incidents reflect a troubling pattern of corruption that the CBI is actively working to dismantle.

Implications for the Business Community

The arrest of CGST officials involved in bribery has significant implications for the business community. Such corrupt practices not only hinder the ease of doing business but also erode trust in public institutions. The CBI’s proactive measures serve as a deterrent to corrupt practices and aim to foster a more transparent and fair business environment.

Conclusion

The CBI’s recent arrests in Baraut are part of a broader effort to combat corruption within the CGST departments nationwide. By holding officials accountable for their actions, the agency aims to restore public confidence and ensure that government processes operate with integrity and transparency.
