The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has arrested a superintendent of the CGST and Central Excise Commissionerate, Bhopal, for allegedly accepting a ₹2 lakh bribe from a scrap business proprietor. Searches at the accused officer’s residential premises in Bhopal and Kanpur led to the recovery of ₹72.50 lakh in cash and documents relating to immovable property.

According to a CBI press release dated October 11, 2026, the officer was posted in the Preventive Branch at the commissionerate’s headquarters. The arrest took place on October 10, 2026, following a trap laid by the agency.

Alleged Monthly Demand To Allow Scrap Business To Operate

The case concerns an alleged demand for a recurring payment from the proprietor of a Bhopal-based firm engaged in the scrap business.

The CBI stated that the superintendent allegedly demanded ₹2 lakh per month in exchange for not intercepting vehicles carrying scrap material and not creating hindrances to the complainant’s business.

The allegation therefore relates to a monthly payment sought in return for allowing the movement of scrap consignments and the operation of the business without interference from the accused officer.

The agency registered the case against the superintendent on October 10, 2026.

Officer Caught During CBI Trap

After registering the case, the CBI laid a trap and allegedly caught the superintendent red-handed while accepting ₹2 lakh.

The agency described the payment as an “undue advantage” connected to the alleged demand. The superintendent was subsequently arrested in the bribery case.

The press release does not disclose the accused officer’s name or identify the complainant’s firm. It also does not provide details of the underlying consignments or any tax proceedings concerning the business.

Searches In Bhopal And Kanpur

The CBI also conducted searches at the accused officer’s residential premises in Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh, and Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh.

According to the agency, these searches resulted in the recovery of ₹72.50 lakh in cash, along with documents pertaining to immovable property.

The cash recovered during the searches was reported separately from the ₹2 lakh allegedly accepted during the trap. The release does not specify how much cash was recovered from each location, the particulars of the properties referred to in the documents, or the source of the recovered money.

Investigation Continues

The CBI stated that the investigation is continuing. Its release does not disclose details of any court appearance, remand order or chargesheet.

The alleged monthly bribe demand, the acceptance of ₹2 lakh and the recovery of cash and property documents form the principal developments disclosed by the agency. The allegations remain subject to investigation and adjudication; the arrest and recoveries do not, by themselves, establish guilt.
