The Himachal Pradesh High Court has directed the Central Board Of Direct Taxes (CBDT) to extend Income Tax Return (ITR) due date.
The direction came during the hearing of a petition filed seeking an extension of the due date in view of persistent technical glitches, heavy compliance workload, and difficulties faced by taxpayers and Chartered Accountants across the country.
The Court has ordered that the last date for filing Audit Returns be extended, and further directed the Department to submit a compliance report before the Court on or before November 4, 2025.
This development follows similar proceedings before other High Courts, including the Punjab & Haryana High Court, which recently recorded the CBDT’s assurance that necessary orders regarding ITR due date extension are likely to be issued soon.
With multiple High Courts across the country now considering or directing relief measures, stakeholders await the official notification from the CBDT, which is expected to bring uniform clarity on the extended due dates for filing of Income Tax Returns and Tax Audit Reports for Assessment Year 2025–26.
Tax professionals have welcomed the order, noting that it will provide much-needed time to ensure accurate and compliant filings amid technical and procedural challenges.
