The controversial Mahadev betting app—now rebranded as “Mahaadev”—has resurfaced alongside the ongoing Indian Premier League season, raising fresh concerns for enforcement agencies.

The platform, which had previously come under intense scrutiny during a nationwide crackdown, appears to have resumed operations through renamed websites and proxy links, continuing to facilitate illegal betting activities across a wide range of events.

The app had earlier been investigated by the Enforcement Directorate in connection with a suspected money laundering network estimated at around ₹6,000 crore. The probe had also drawn political attention, including the questioning of former Bhupesh Baghel over alleged links with individuals associated with the platform.

Betting Beyond Cricket

While IPL matches remain a key attraction, the platform has significantly broadened its scope. Users can now place bets not only on cricket but also on multiple sports such as football, tennis, basketball, baseball, volleyball, rugby, ice hockey, and even niche events like horse racing, greyhound racing, and cockfighting.

More controversially, the app has ventured into political betting markets. Wagers are reportedly being accepted on outcomes of assembly elections in states such as West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Assam, and the Union Territory of Puducherry. Betting options include projections of seat shares for major alliances, along with “odd/even” seat outcomes and predefined ranges, typically with stakes ranging from ₹100 to ₹10,000.

Regulatory Ban Ignored

The resurgence comes despite the enactment of the Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Act, 2025, which prohibits all forms of online money gaming, irrespective of whether they involve skill or chance. The continued operation of Mahaadev highlights persistent enforcement challenges in curbing such platforms.

Discreet Onboarding and Payment Channels

The platform employs a simple yet covert registration process. Prospective users are directed to obtain login credentials via WhatsApp by sending a pre-filled message. Operators then provide demo access, login details, and a UPI QR code for a registration fee of approximately ₹300. Upon payment confirmation, users receive account credentials along with tutorial videos explaining deposit and withdrawal mechanisms.

Real-Time Betting Interface

Mahaadev’s interface mimics sophisticated trading platforms, offering real-time betting aligned with live events. During IPL matches, users can place wagers not only on match outcomes but also on micro-events such as runs scored in specific overs, fall of wickets, and even ball-by-ball predictions. The system displays dynamic odds with continuous “Yes/No” betting options.

Additionally, the app offers “fancy” or combination bets, allowing users to bundle multiple predictions for higher returns. Betting limits range from modest amounts to high-value stakes, catering to a broad user base.

Diversification Into Adult Content

In a further attempt to boost engagement, the platform has introduced adult-themed “strip games,” where animated characters perform actions based on the amount wagered—indicating a shift towards diversified, and potentially more problematic, content offerings.

Evasion Tactics and Enforcement Challenges

According to senior law enforcement officials, the operators are leveraging mirror websites, encrypted communication channels, offshore servers, and layered financial transactions to evade detection. These tactics, combined with decentralized operations, make regulatory intervention increasingly difficult.

The re-emergence of Mahaadev underscores the ongoing struggle faced by authorities in dismantling large-scale illegal betting networks. Despite previous crackdowns and financial probes, the platform’s ability to adapt and rebrand highlights the resilience of such illicit ecosystems in India’s digital landscape.
