The 57th Meeting of the Goods and Services Tax Council has been rescheduled and will now be held on October 7, 2026, in New Delhi, according to an Office Memorandum issued by the GST Council Secretariat.

The meeting was earlier scheduled for September 12, 2026. The revised schedule was communicated by Arvind Shrivastava, Secretary to the Government of India and ex-officio Secretary to the GST Council.

As per the Office Memorandum, the 57th GST Council Meeting will commence at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, October 7, 2026.

The Officers’ Meeting, which precedes the Council’s deliberations, has also been rescheduled. It will now be conducted over two days—October 5 and October 6, 2026—in New Delhi.

The first session of the Officers’ Meeting will begin at 3:00 p.m. on Monday, October 5, while the second session will commence at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, October 6.

The revised schedule is as follows:

  • Officers’ Meeting: October 5, 2026, from 3:00 p.m. onwards
  • Officers’ Meeting: October 6, 2026, from 10:30 a.m. onwards
  • 57th GST Council Meeting: October 7, 2026, from 11:00 a.m. onwards

The Secretariat stated that details regarding the venue and final agenda items for both the GST Council Meeting and the Officers’ Meeting would be communicated in due course.

The latest memorandum refers to earlier official communications dated August 28 and September 2, 2026. Those communications had indicated that the Council meeting would take place on September 12 in New Delhi, preceded by officers’ meetings on September 10 and 11.

With the fresh communication, the September programme stands replaced by the October schedule. The Secretariat has requested that the revised dates be conveyed to the respective members of the GST Council to facilitate their attendance.

The GST Council, chaired by the Union Finance Minister and comprising representatives of the Centre and states, is the constitutional body responsible for making recommendations on key GST matters. Its meetings typically consider proposals relating to tax rates, exemptions, procedural reforms, compliance requirements and issues raised by the Centre, states and trade stakeholders.

The officers’ meetings assume importance because officials examine and deliberate upon the proposals before they are formally placed before the Council. Their recommendations and discussions provide the groundwork for the Council’s final consideration of agenda items.

While the dates have now been formally notified, the specific issues that will come up for discussion at the 57th meeting have not yet been announced. The final agenda and venue are expected to be circulated separately by the GST Council Secretariat.
