Ahmedabad Customs Foils Rs. 13.80 Crore Luxury Watch Smuggling Attempt by Couple

In a major enforcement action, Ahmedabad Customs officials have busted a high-value smuggling attempt involving luxury watches worth a staggering ₹13.80 crore. A couple, arriving on separate international flights, was apprehended while trying to sneak the high-end timepieces into the country without declaring them to customs authorities.

According to officials, the two watches — valued at ₹12.50 crore and ₹1.30 crore respectively — were concealed in the passengers’ hand luggage in an apparent attempt to evade hefty customs duties. In a calculated move, the couple wore the watches on their wrists while placing the empty boxes in their checked-in baggage to avoid suspicion.

However, alert customs officers grew suspicious and carried out a thorough examination, leading to the discovery of the undeclared luxury items. The timepieces were immediately seized under the provisions of the Customs Act, 1962.

Following the seizure, the couple was placed under arrest and is currently being investigated for violations related to smuggling and non-declaration of dutiable goods.

Customs authorities are treating the case as a significant breach and reiterated their commitment to curbing high-value smuggling through Indian airports. Further inquiries are underway to determine if the accused are linked to any broader smuggling syndicate.

The seizure underscores the vigilance of Indian Customs in tracking and intercepting attempts to illegally import luxury items and defraud the exchequer.
