Sumit Dutt Majumder Releases His Fifth Book on GST: “GST After About Eight Years – An Evaluation”

The former Chairman of the Central Board of Excise and Customs (CBEC), Sumit Dutt Majumder is set to launch his fifth book on Goods and Services Tax (GST), titled “GST After About Eight Years – An Evaluation”, on Sunday, May 11, 2025 at Delhi.

The book, a comprehensive evaluation of GST implementation and evolution in India over the past eight years, draws from a decade-long series of articles published by Majumder in Tax India Online (TIOL). The launch event will feature a distinguished panel of speakers, each contributing unique perspectives on GST and its journey:

  • Mr. M.K. Sinha, IRS, CEO of GST Network (GSTN)
  • Mr. Shailendra Kumar, Founder & CEO of Tax India Online
  • Mr. Sumit Dutt Majumder, IRS (Retd.), Author, and Former Chairman, Central Board of Excise and Customs; presently Chairman of the Committee of Trustees, Deshbandhu Chittaranjan Memorial Society
  • Mr. Jayanta Roy Chowdhury, Senior Journalist, who will anchor and moderate the session

Majumder’s latest work comprises 31 meticulously curated articles written between 2013 and 2022. The book provides a chronological evaluation and evolution of GST, tracing the policy’s journey from conception in 2006 to its present-day execution. It features both introductory and concluding chapters to contextualize the developments and their implications for tax practitioners, professionals, and trainees alike.

About the Author

Sumit Dutt Majumder, who joined the Indian Revenue Service in 1974 after completing his Master’s in Physics from IIT Kharagpur, has played a pivotal role in GST development since 2009. As a member and later Chairman (Central Excise), he contributed directly to the GST policy framework. Post-retirement, he continued engaging with industry, academia, and international forums such as the Asia Pacific Tax Forum and EU-sponsored GST capacity-building projects.

He has previously presented views to the Select Committee of the Rajya Sabha and received several accolades, including the “Asiad Jyoti Award” and the “Presidential Award” from Dr. Manmohan Singh in 1992. His previous GST books are prominently featured in this new release, reflecting a sustained scholarly contribution to India’s tax reform discourse.
