The Centre has outpaced States in per-GSTIN collections for April, despite having significantly fewer GST registrations, sparking debate ahead of the next GST Council meeting.

According to GST portal data, the Centre recorded ₹89,075 crore in gross GST collections from 63.2 lakh GSTINs, averaging ₹1.4 lakh per GSTIN. In comparison, States collectively collected ₹1,00,729 crore from 88.5 lakh GSTINs, averaging a lower ₹1.14 lakh per GSTIN.

Among the major States, Haryana topped the per-GSTIN collection chart at ₹3.04 lakh, followed by Maharashtra (₹2.56 lakh), and Karnataka (₹2.09 lakh). Uttar Pradesh, which has the highest number of GSTINs at over 10.8 lakh, recorded the lowest per-GSTIN collection of ₹0.65 lakh.

The issue is expected to be taken up by the Revenue Augmentation wing of the GST Council. Observers emphasize the need for equitable treatment of taxpayers, regardless of whether they fall under the Centre or State jurisdiction.
