The Indian government has announced a ₹2 per litre increase in Special Additional Excise Duty (SAED) on both petrol and diesel, effective April 8, 2025. This revision will raise the SAED on petrol from ₹11 to ₹13 per litre and on diesel from ₹8 to ₹10 per litre.
Importantly, the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas clarified that this hike applies only to fuel meant for export, ensuring no change in domestic retail fuel prices. Consumers across India will continue to pay the same rates at petrol pumps.
This move comes at a time when crude oil prices remain volatile in global markets. Despite an initial oil rally, concerns over fresh US tariffs and global supply uncertainties have softened the momentum. Meanwhile, shares of major state-run oil companies like ONGC and Oil India fell sharply—each declining by over 9%—amid falling Brent crude oil prices.
