In a major crackdown on illegal trade, the Special Intelligence and Investigation Branch (SIIB) at Chennai Port has busted a counterfeit cigarette smuggling racket. Acting on specific intelligence and sustained surveillance, SIIB officials raided two godowns, leading to the recovery and seizure of 2,20,000 sticks of counterfeit ITC-branded cigarettes, valued at ₹39.64 lakh.

Sources indicate that the seized consignment was part of a larger smuggling network attempting to distribute counterfeit cigarettes in the market. The illicit trade of such goods not only results in significant revenue loss to the government but also raises concerns about consumer health and safety.

Authorities have launched a deeper investigation to identify those involved in the racket and trace the supply chain of these counterfeit products. Further legal action is underway.

This operation underscores customs officials’ vigilance in curbing illicit trade and safeguarding both revenue interests and consumer rights.
