The Air Intelligence Unit (AIU) at Tiruchirappalli International Airport has seized concealed 24-carat gold chains weighing 648 grams from three international passengers.

The seizure was made on September 8, 2026, after AIU officers intercepted the passengers upon their arrival from Kuala Lumpur. They had travelled to Trichy on Batik Air flight OD 223.

Acting on suspicion, the officers conducted a detailed search of the passengers. The examination resulted in the recovery of gold chains that had allegedly been concealed to evade detection by Customs authorities.

The recovered gold, weighing 648 grams in gross weight, was found to be of 24-carat purity. Its value was assessed at approximately ₹1.01 crore on an FIP basis.

The incident highlights the continued vigilance of Customs and AIU officials at international airports against attempts to smuggle high-value gold into the country.

Further proceedings are being undertaken in accordance with the provisions of the Customs Act, 1962, including an investigation into the source of the gold, its intended recipients and the possible involvement of other persons in the alleged smuggling operation.
