Ahmedabad Customs officers have seized 729 grams of 22K and 18K gold jewellery, valued at approximately ₹98.79 lakh, from a female passenger who arrived at the airport from Abu Dhabi. The gold jewellery was allegedly concealed inside her purse and beneath her garments in an attempt to evade detection.

According to Customs officials, the passenger was intercepted on the basis of intelligence and profiling upon her arrival. During the examination, officers discovered 729 grams of gold jewellery comprising 22-karat and 18-karat ornaments hidden inside the passenger’s purse as well as concealed beneath her clothing.

The seized jewellery has an estimated market value of ₹98.79 lakh. Customs authorities have taken possession of the gold under the provisions of the Customs Act, 1962, on the reasonable belief that it was being smuggled into India in violation of the applicable customs laws.

The passenger has been questioned regarding the source, ownership, and intended delivery of the gold jewellery. Officials are examining whether the seizure is linked to a larger smuggling network operating through international flight routes.

The Customs department has initiated a detailed investigation to ascertain the complete facts, including the passenger’s travel history, the intended recipients of the jewellery, and any possible involvement of accomplices. Appropriate legal action will be taken based on the outcome of the investigation.

The seizure forms part of the Customs department‘s continued efforts to curb the smuggling of precious metals through Indian airports. Gold remains one of the most frequently smuggled commodities into the country due to the significant difference between international and domestic prices and the high customs duty applicable on its import.

Further investigation is underway.
