The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) has successfully thwarted two separate attempts to smuggle Chinese-origin fireworks and firecrackers into India through Chennai Port, leading to the seizure of thousands of prohibited fireworks and exposing an organised smuggling network.

According to the Ministry of Finance, the operation was carried out based on specific intelligence inputs received by DRI officers. During the investigation, officials intercepted two 40-foot shipping containers that had arrived from China. The import documents falsely declared the cargo as trolley bags and agricultural sprayers in an apparent attempt to evade customs scrutiny.

However, a thorough physical examination of the containers revealed that the declared goods were merely used as cover cargo. Hidden behind them were approximately 46,000 pieces of Chinese-origin firecrackers and fireworks, carefully concealed to avoid detection by customs authorities.

The seizure highlights the increasing use of sophisticated concealment techniques by smuggling syndicates to bring prohibited goods into the country through major ports.

Separate Intelligence-Led Operation Exposes Larger Smuggling Network

In a related development, another case initiated on the basis of intelligence generated by the DRI resulted in Chennai Customs uncovering a major smuggling syndicate engaged in the illegal import and clandestine clearance of Chinese-origin fireworks.

The investigation led to the detection of the unauthorized removal of 18.7 metric tonnes of Chinese-origin firecrackers, indicating the involvement of a well-organized network operating to bypass customs regulations and import restrictions.

Crackdown on Illegal Fireworks Imports

Chinese-origin firecrackers are subject to stringent import restrictions in India owing to safety, environmental, and regulatory concerns. Authorities have repeatedly warned that attempts to import such products through false declarations and concealed consignments pose significant risks to public safety and undermine legitimate trade.

The latest seizures underscore the continued vigilance of the DRI and Customs authorities in identifying fraudulent import declarations and dismantling organised smuggling operations at India’s ports.

Further investigation is underway to identify the importers, intermediaries, and other individuals involved in the smuggling network, while authorities are examining the entire supply chain behind the illegal consignments.
