In a significant anti-corruption operation, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has arrested a Superintendent and an Inspector of the Goods and Services Tax (GST) department in connection with a bribery case in Ranipet.

According to the CBI, the case was registered on April 7, 2026, following a complaint alleging that a Superintendent posted in the GST Ranipet Range demanded an undue advantage of ₹30,000 from a taxpayer for facilitating GST registration clearance.

After negotiations, the accused official allegedly agreed to accept a reduced bribe of ₹15,000. Acting on the complaint, the CBI laid a trap on the same day and caught the Superintendent red-handed while demanding the agreed amount.

During the course of the trap proceedings, the involvement of a GST Inspector also came to light. In an attempt to destroy evidence, the Inspector reportedly concealed the bribe money in a toilet commode and flushed it upon noticing the presence of the CBI team. However, officials later recovered the tainted amount from the toilet.

Both accused officials have been taken into custody, and further investigation is currently underway to determine the full extent of the conspiracy and any additional involvement.

The CBI reiterated its commitment to tackling corruption in public offices and urged citizens to report any instances of bribery or misconduct by government officials.
