The Maharashtra government has notified that the professional tax, due date is 15th March instead of 31st March.
The Government of Maharashtra has reminded taxpayers about the payment of Profession Tax, highlighting that the levy, though small in amount, plays an important role in supporting state revenues. The advisory issued by the Maharashtra Goods and Services Tax Department emphasises that eligible individuals and establishments must comply with the revised due date for payment and return filing.
According to the department, individuals registered under PTEC (Profession Tax Enrollment Certificate) — including traders, business entities, service providers, and professionals such as doctors, advocates, chartered accountants, and consultants — are required to pay ₹2,500 per person per year. The payment must be made on or before March 15, 2026.
The advisory also highlights that proprietors, directors, and partners of business entities who fall under the enrollment category are required to make the annual payment within the prescribed timeline to avoid penalties.
For employers registered under PTRC (Profession Tax Registration Certificate), the tax applies to establishments employing staff. Such entities are responsible for deducting and depositing profession tax from employees’ salaries based on applicable salary slabs.
The department has also revised the due date for filing returns and making payments for both annual and monthly periodicity, which will now be March 15, 2026 instead of March 31, 2026. The change aims to streamline compliance and ensure timely collection of the levy.
As per the notified salary slabs under PTRC, male employees earning up to ₹7,500 per month and female employees earning up to ₹25,000 per month are exempt from profession tax. Male employees earning between ₹7,501 and ₹10,000 per month are liable to pay ₹2,100 annually, while employees earning above the specified thresholds must pay ₹2,500 per year.
The state government has urged taxpayers and employers to complete their payments within the revised deadline to ensure smooth compliance and avoid late fees or penalties.
