In a major anti-narcotics action, a High-Level Drug Disposal Committee (HLDDC) of the Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC) destroyed 69 kilograms of narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances (NDPS) valued at approximately Rs. 175 crore.
The destruction was carried out through incineration at the Common Hazardous Waste Treatment, Storage and Disposal Facility (CHWTSDF) operated by Mumbai Waste Management Limited (MWML) in Navi Mumbai.
The committee comprised senior officials from Mumbai Zone-I of CBIC and the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI), Mumbai Zonal Unit (MZU). The narcotics had been seized in various operations conducted by the DRI as part of its sustained crackdown on drug trafficking networks.
The destroyed contraband included marijuana, cocaine, amphetamine, and heroin. Officials stated that the disposal was undertaken in strict compliance with the provisions of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act and the prescribed standard operating procedures for safe and environmentally compliant destruction of seized drugs.
Authorities said the move reflects the government’s zero-tolerance policy against drug trafficking and substance abuse. The systematic destruction of seized narcotics not only ensures that the contraband does not re-enter illegal circulation but also reinforces transparency and accountability in the disposal process.
The DRI has been intensifying its enforcement efforts against international and domestic drug syndicates, particularly those attempting to use Indian ports and logistics channels for smuggling activities. The latest disposal exercise underscores the agency’s continued commitment to dismantling organized drug networks and preventing the proliferation of illicit substances in the country.
