CBIC Empanels, Promotes 55 IRS Officers as Commissioners of Customs & Indirect Taxes

The President of India has approved the empanelment and promotion of 55 Indian Revenue Service (IRS) officers of the Customs & Indirect Taxes (C&IT) stream to the grade of Commissioner of Customs & Indirect Taxes in Level 14 of the Pay Matrix (Senior Administrative Grade – SAG) for the panel year 2026.

The promotions have been notified by the Central Board of Indirect Taxes & Customs (CBIC) under the Department of Revenue, Ministry of Finance vide Office Order No. 01/2026 dated January 1, 2026. 

The promoted officers will assume charge of the promotional post from the date they take charge and will continue until further orders.

As per the office order, the regular posting of these officers will be decided separately with the approval of the competent authority. Until then, they shall assume charge of the promotional post on an “in-situ” basis (as is where is). Officers presently on deputation will be promoted from the date they return to the cadre and assume charge of the promotional post.

The CBIC has directed that a compliance report regarding joining of the promoted officers be sent to the Board immediately, with a copy endorsed to ADG (HRM-II), DGHRD. The Hindi version of the order is to follow.

The office order has been issued with the approval of the competent authority and is signed by S.A. Ansari, Deputy Secretary to the Government of India.

This large-scale empanelment reflects the Government’s ongoing efforts to strengthen leadership capacity within the indirect tax administration at a time when GST stabilisation, customs reforms, and trade facilitation remain key policy priorities.
