FinMin Extends Tenure of PFRDA Whole-Time Member Mamta Shankar Till September 2026

The Finance Ministry has extended the tenure of Ms. Mamta Shankar, Whole-Time Member (Economics) of the Pension Fund Regulatory and Development Authority (PFRDA), until she attains the age of 62 years—i.e., up to September 13, 2026, or until further orders, whichever is earlier.

The decision has been notified under Section 4 of the Pension Fund Regulatory and Development Authority Act, 2013. Ms. Shankar’s current term was originally set to conclude on April 9, 2026, and the extension ensures continuity in the leadership of the regulatory body responsible for overseeing India’s National Pension System (NPS) and other pension-related reforms.

About Mamta Shankar and Her Role at PFRDA

As the Whole-Time Member (Economics) at PFRDA, Ms. Shankar plays a key role in policy formulation, economic oversight, and development of India’s pension regulatory framework. Her tenure has coincided with major reforms in pension governance, digital transformation initiatives, and expansion of the subscriber base under NPS and Atal Pension Yojana.

The extension is seen as a move to preserve administrative stability at a time when the pension sector is undergoing continued expansion and regulatory evolution.

Legal Basis for Extension

The extension has been granted under Section 4 of the PFRDA Act, 2013, which empowers the Central Government to appoint or extend the tenure of members of the Authority, including Whole-Time Members.
