Pramod Rai Appointed As Judicial Member of GST Appellate Tribunal: Know Him

Mr. Pramod Rai, a distinguished lawyer, former IRS officer, and educationist, has been appointed as a Judicial Member of the Goods and Services Tax Appellate Tribunal (GSTAT). His induction is being seen as a valuable addition to the tribunal, which plays a pivotal role in adjudicating complex GST-related disputes across the country.

Mr. Rai brings with him a rare combination of expertise in indirect taxation, competition law, and insolvency matters, along with 18 years of experience as an advocate. His earlier 10-year stint in the Indian Revenue Service, including his roles as Senior Standing Counsel in the Delhi High Court and as a departmental representative in CESTAT, further strengthens his credentials.

An alumnus of IIT Kanpur with a degree in engineering, Mr. Rai later transitioned into the legal field, earning a law degree (LLB) with a gold medal. He went on to pursue an LL.M. from the University of Georgia, USA, on full university funding—an academic trajectory that highlights his strong interdisciplinary foundation.

Beyond his professional achievements, Mr. Rai is deeply engaged in education and community service. He operates a charitable trust and runs a CBSE-affiliated secondary school that supports underprivileged students through scholarships and financial aid. His dedication to social impact has been as consistent as his commitment to legal excellence.

With his diverse background and wide-ranging expertise, Mr. Rai is expected to play a crucial role in enhancing the GSTAT’s effectiveness, particularly in handling nuanced and high-stakes tax litigation. His appointment signals the government’s intent to strengthen the tribunal with individuals who combine domain knowledge with a strong sense of public duty.
