In a sharp escalation of trade tensions, U.S. President Donald Trump launched a scathing attack on India and its close trade partner Russia, just hours after imposing a steep 25% tariff on Indian goods. Taking to Truth Social, Trump declared that he had little interest in India’s commercial ties with Russia, stating bluntly, “They can take their dead economies down together, for all I care.”

Trump accused India of maintaining excessively high tariffs and obstructive non-tariff barriers, claiming, “We’ve done very little business with them because their tariffs are among the highest in the world.” He also dismissed the significance of economic relations with Russia, adding, “Russia and the USA do almost no business together — and let’s keep it that way.”

Despite referring to India as a “friend” in his announcement, Trump stood firm on the new trade measures, criticizing New Delhi’s restrictive trade practices.

The Indian government has acknowledged the development and said it is currently assessing the full implications of Trump’s statements and the new tariff policy. Officials added that India remains committed to pursuing a balanced and mutually beneficial trade agreement with the United States.

Stay tuned for real-time updates on the evolving India-US trade standoff.
