Instructions from CBIC for Authorized Officers in respect of import of food under FSS Act 2006

The Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC) instructed authorized officers with respect to import of food  under FSS Act 2006.

Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs issued notification to all the Principal Chief Commissioner/ Chief Commissioner of Customs/ Customs (Preventive), all the Principal Chief Commissioner/ Chief Commissioner of Central Excise & Customs, all Principal Chief Commissioner of Customs/ Customs (Preventive) and all the Principal Commissioner/ Commissioner of Central Tax & Customs 

The Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs in its notification stated that FSSAI has notified Authorized officers at 157 Points of Entries (PoEs) for food, wherein 104 PoEs are to be manned by Customs officials as Authorized officers (ACs) while 53 PoEs are manned by FSSAl officials.

The notification added that FSSAI has provided a list of Food Testing Laboratories. The testing of samples of imported food is to be carried out in FSSAI notified labs only with valid NABL accreditation. Customs officials notified as Authorized Officers at 104 PoEs shall ensure that only these FSSAI notified labs are being utilized for analysis of samples of imported food items.

Under Secretary to the Government of India Kevin Boban requested that necessary action may be taken to sensitize officers under their jurisdiction regarding the said matter.
